It is 1966 and the Vietnam War is raging. Three young men from the small town of Chapacola, Florida, are inducted into the Army together. Lenny Roethe, a transplanted middle-class Yankee, and Walter Moody, a poor African American, form an unlikely friendship. Their friendship angers fellow inductee Donald "Yoyo" Willard, a pugilistic, prejudiced son of a poor, white, gas-station owner. Walter, who is very religious, is as different from Lenny as anyone can be. Lenny, whenever he gets a chance, is pursuing his newest sexual conquest, while Walter is likely to be at the nearest chapel or church. The three young men, once in Vietnam, suffer vastly different fates - but back home in Chapacola, they will be legend.
